History of Uniport

Uniport was founded in Rotterdam in 1971. The first company was Uniport Stevedoring Company N.V. (USC), for handling general cargo ships. This company started its activities by taking over the terminal area of the Royal Rotterdam Lloyd at the Lloydquay/Schiehaven, in the city area of the Port of Rotterdam.

The total area of this terminal was 65.000 m2 with a total quay length of 1.050 m, 5 warehouses of totally 20.000 m2 and 15 general cargo cranes.

Within 7 years Uniport Stevedoring Company achieved a turnover of more than 1 million tons of general cargo. Therefore a second general cargo terminal located at the Merwehaven was taken over in 1978. This terminal was also situated in the city area of the Port of Rotterdam.

The Merwehaven area was totally rebuild to be used as a modern container terminal. The Merwehaven had an area of 35.000 m2, a quay length of 350 m and 2 new container cranes.

To reflect the change from general cargo to more and more containers the name of the company was renamed in Uniport Multipurpose Terminals (UMT) in 1984.

Uniport moved to a much bigger container terminal at Pier 7, Rotterdam Waalhaven, in the city area of the Port of Rotterdam in 1996. This terminal has an area of 230.000 m2 and a quay length of 800 m. This relocation was necessary thanks to the steadily growth of our turnover from 75.000 TEU to 400.000 TEU on a yearly basis.

Further expansions followed. In 2007 Uniport acquired the connecting Pier 5 and Pier 6 in the same basis at the Waalhaven, Rotterdam.

Based on this expansion the total terminal facilities are now in the present situation: approx. 540.000 m2 and a quay length of 2.400 m to be able to handle approx. 1.200.000 TEU including an integrated barge terminal.
